Adkins is the third of three talented lefties from the SEC (David Price, Nick Schmidt) that could be selected in the first round of the draft. Adkins enjoyed a fast start to his college career, spending some time as the Volunteers' Friday starter while striking out 135 batters in just over 127 innings of work. A shoulder injury slowed his progression during his sophomore year, but he still proved he could miss bats despite not pitching with his best stuff by fanning 112 batters in 106 innings of work. When healthy, his fastball sits in the 88-91 range, and while he doesn't have a dominant arsenal, he gets so many swings and misses that he does by mixing in a solid curve, slider and changeup. His size, stuff and past performance should allow him to go early in the draft as long as he has a strong junior campaign.
