LaPorta was in Brewerfan.net's top five overall prospects at one point a year ago, having the best power potential of any 2006 prospective draftee while coming off of a huge sophomore season. A strained oblique muscle played a big part in his drop in production, and once he started to struggle things really started to spiral for both LaPorta and the disappointing Florida Gators. He did rebound well last summer and started to show some of that power again on his way to be named the league's 15th best prospect according to Baseball America. While he has prodigious power potential, he also strikes out a ton, and doesn't seem to care about defense at first base. Scott Boras also was reportedly his advisor, which won't help his draft placement if signability becomes an issue. As a college senior, he doesn't have any leverage left, and will need to prove his bat is still legit.
