I last reported on battery mate data two months ago (see http://www.brewerfan.net/fullArticle.jsp?articleId=64 for details). Since then there have been numerous changes. Pitchers have been injured, sent down, called up, or left the team. Casanova went on the DL and was replaced by Marcus Jensen. Machado was acquired in trade to replace the injured Bako. So there are a lot more pitcher / catcher combinations to look at. Here is the current data that I've been able to compile (and mea culpa on any mistakes):

Again, it's very hard to reach definitive conclusions based on the sample size. Still, I'll attempt to make a few comments on the data.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Ruben Quevedo has been a man of mystery this season. After a terrible start due to dead arm / weakness stemming from quick weight loss / poor mental approach / pick your own explanation, he was improving dramatically over time until the last couple of starts. But it's fairly clear that he's pitched best with Paul Bako as his regular catcher. When Bako comes back, that's probably the ideal battery from both a pitcher / catcher effectiveness standpoint and an offensive standpoint.

"The rookie has things to work on."

Opposing runners have stolen 39 bases and been caught 18 times. A 68 % success rate which is basically break even. Even that stat is slightly skewed, however. Nick Neugebauer was totally ineffective at holding runners on, allowing seven stolen bases to only two caught stealing (and you can toss in 3 wild pitches, which helps explain Nukes struggles before injury). Removing Neugebauer for the equation, the Brewers have allowed 32 SBs to 16 CS which is the historical break even point and probably less than that in today's high power era when unnecessary outs can cost you a big inning. It's not Nomo crisis levels, but it's something the rookie needs to work on.

Due to injuries, I'm not sure any of the data presented above rises to the level of statistical significance. One or two bad games, that may be solely the result of the pitcher, can skew the data. Not to mention, other trends due to time, injuries, or even which teams have been faced are other factors that aren't accounted for. Again, at this point, I think the data to date is just a starting point for discussion.
