Schmidt transferred to South Florida after his sophomore year at Georgia Tech. He was drafted by the Orioles out of high school in the 29th round in the 2001 draft. Good size for a pitcher with a strong, durable frame. Despite his size, Schmidt is not overpowering. His fastball works in the 88-90 range, and he complements that well with a great curveball. He relies on location & changing his speeds, as all of his pitches have good movement. He works well down in the zone, and has good command. Since he doesn't profile as much more than a #4/5 type of pitcher, Schmidt likely won't go in the top few rounds.
