Toby's Power 50
  Power 50 Notes
last updated: 07/17/2003

The big news this time around is, of course, Prince's rise to #3 on the P50. It was a combination of Prince playing very well, and playing more often than Krynzel or Jones. Krynzel missed playing time due to the AA All-Star Break and the Futures Game, and Jones has been having problems with a sore arm, and he'll miss another few weeks beyond this. It's not to say that Prince didn't earn it, though. With his 22nd home run this evening, he's on a tear that even the pitcher-friendly ballparks of the Midwest League can't handle anymore. Look out above... Speaking of being on a hitting tear, Lou Palmisano is terrorizing Pioneer League pitching, and if the Helena Brewers weren't in a pennant race, he might already be in Beloit... Jeff Housman was promoted earlier in the day from Beloit to Huntsville, and figueres to give the overworked pitching staff there a break. It's not nearly as hard of a jump for pitchers as it is for hitters... Power 50 factoid of the week: This is the first time in Power 50 history that a pitcher has not occupied one of the top 3 spots.

  Power 50
+/- Rank  Name  Level  Pos  Age
 01 Hardy, J.J.   MLB   SS 37 R R
One more sign of the apocalypse: JJ went 0-5 the other day
 02 Nelson, Brad   A   1B 36 L R
The die has been cast with Prince now at #3; Nelly needs to step up to hold on
2  03 Fielder, Prince   A   1B 35 L R
Leapfrogging Krynzel and Jones in one week? That's what 21 jacks will do for you
1  04 Jones, Mike   A   MR 36 R R
Sore arm is nothing serious, but you don't like to see the words "sore arm" attached to a prospect pitcher
1  05 Krynzel, Dave   MLB   CF 38 L L
Dave just hasn't been playing enough recently to keep up with Prince, hence the drop of a spot
 06 Parra, Manny   A   MR 37 L L
Congrats to Manny for winning pitcher of the month honors for June
 07 Hendrickson, Ben   MLB   SP 38 R R
It's good to see the K/BB ratio at a better than 2:1 ratio
 08 Hart, Corey   A   OF 37 R R
After enduring a protracted slump, Corey seems to be breaking out of it
 09 Ford, Matt   A   MR 38 S L
Matt will stay in the rotation for the time being as he continues to stretch his arm out, and hopefully that will lead to some more promising performances
 10 Martinez, Luis   MLB   SP 39 L L
Still the only pitcher in the system with 100+ K's, the magic keeps on rolling for Looie
 11 Diggins, Ben   A   MR 40 R R
There continues to be no news on Ben, other than he's still somewhere in Arizona
 12 Petty, Chad   A   SP 37 L L
Hey, the ERA is under 9, it's a start
1  13 Gwynn Jr, Tony   MLB   OF 37 L R
Imagine what Tony would be hitting like if he had been assigned to Helena? Wowsa
1  14 Wilhelmsen, Tom   A   MR 36 R R
Who here thinks the Brewers are going to skip young Tom past High Desert next season? Me too
 15 Cruz, Enrique   A   SS 38 R R
It's shaping up to be a dogfight between Enrique and Wayne Franklin for higher OPS
 16 Clark, D.J.   A   LF 40 L R
With Knox off to AAA to stay, there's no reason why DJ shouldn't be getting virtually all the at-bats in LF
 17 Moss, Steve   A   CF 35 R R
If Steve hadn't injured himself, an outfield including him, Gwynn, and Bibbs would have been unbelieveably good defensively
2  18 Hall, Billy   MLB   3B 39 R R
I'm officially kind of convinced that Billy has had a breakthrough in AAA
1  19 Liriano, Pedro   A   SP 39 R R
Pedro must have done something in a past life to deserve losing 10 times with some of the outings he's had
1  20 Belcher, Jason   A   RF 37 L R
I'm still hoping that the low strike out rate (almost 10:1 AB:K) will someday give birth to more walks
2  21 Palmisano, Lou   A   C 37 R R
Lou is not only leading the Pioneer League in batting, but also is a burgeoning superstar on the Brewerfan massage board
3  22 Johnson, Kade   A   C 41 R R
I guess it depends on your definition of a "hot bat", but .179 is better than .150
1  23 Zoccolillo, Peter   AAA   RF 42 L R
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Zocco will finish the year with at least 15 homers
 24 Chavez, Ozzie   A   IF 36 S R
Looks like Ozzie might be back in High Desert next season
 25 Machado, Alejandro   A   2B 37 S R
Slow starts seem to be a running theme with players traded to the Brewers
 26 Carpenter, Calvin   A   SP 37 R R
Outings getting longer and steadier; it'll be interesting to see who gets the nod in the rotation, Carp or Khalid
 27 Varner, Noochie   MLB   RF 39 R R
Walks and stolen bases continue to be an even race, at 7 each
 28 Ballouli, Khalid   A   SP 39 R R
Khalid seems to be getting back into form, and maybe those early season difficulties just had to do with the arm soreness
 29 Adams, Mike   MLB   CL 41 R R
The starting thing hasn't gone too well so far, but 2 starts isn't enough to end the experiment
2  30 Childers, Matt   A   MR 41 R R
Matt made his first start in about a year this last week, which further shows his complete lack of a role on the team
1  31 Gold, J.M.   A   SP 39 R R
There, J.M. is out of the top 30, are all you haters happy now?
2  32 Sarfate, Dennis   MLB   MR 38 R R
All the walks that Dennis gives up are going to start hurting when he gets to High Desert
2  33 Murray, Josh   A   3B 35 R R
Chalk up this season to a dud... Josh is now on pace to be among the 5th or 6th wave of prospects
1  34 Pember, David   A   SP 41 S R
At least when Dave gets back to AAA next season, he'll be on a heckuva team
1  35 Crabbe, Callix   A   UT 36 S R
700 OPS has been hit and the bat just keeps getting hotter
2  36 Ramirez, Carlos   A   SP 35 L L
Yah, he's dominating Helena and should be in Beloit, but he'll only by 19 next season, so I can deal, I guess
2  37 Morris, Chris   A   CF 40 S R
Chris just turned 24, and 24 is not good in High Desert
1  38 Eveland, Dana   MLB   SP 36 L L
After some fantastic opening outings, Dana has fallen on harder times lately
2  39 Thomas, Eric M.   A   SP 38 R R
The question is, where will BA put Mega next season? Will Mega have found his missing arm by then?
 40 Barnes, Justin   A   MR 37 R R
A lot of work to be done here on pitch recognition and swing mechanics
1  41 Fermaint, Charlie   A   CF 34 R R
The hottest bat this side of Lou Palmisano keeps on swinging away
1  42 Housman, Jeff   A   MR 38 L L
Surprise promotion to Huntsville hot off the presses... how much fun would it be to be on that team?
2  43 Obermueller, Wes   A   MR 42 R R
Nothing to complain about or write home about so far... good ERA, bad secondary stuff
 44 Raburn, Johnny   A   IF 40 S R
Remember when I was harping on and on about promoting Johnny? Sorry about that
 45 Gemoll, Brandon   A   1B 39 L L
Still hitting just enough to stay in the lineup, though I dunno about a promotion for Brandon to Indy next season
2  46 Vanden Berg, John   A   C 39 R R
Vandy's bat is still hot as the OPS continues to jet closer to 800
 47 Mannon, Adam   A   RF 36 R R
Adam is already 4th in the organization in triples (3) - that must be why they drafted him
new  48 Ramirez, Manny   A   1B 37 R R
Free of his catching gear, newly minted first baseman Manny is tearing it up in the Pioneer League
new  49 Acosta, Gilberto   A   SS 37 S R
It's puzzling why Acosta is in Arizona and Agustin Septimo is in Helena, and Gilberto is furthering that puzzlement by getting on base all the time
new  50 Bibbs, Kennard   A   RF 39 L L
Small-man Bibbs is back on the list; It seems like he gets on base every game, yet is OBP is only .365

Players removed this week: Matt Parker... Ralph Santana... Froilan Villanueva...
