The Milwaukee Brewers and right-handed pitcher Dave Bush have agreed to terms on a one-year deal avoiding salary arbitration. Bush, 30, signed for $4.125 million in a deal that includes incentives based on appearances.

Bush went 5-9 last year with a 6.38 ERA, although he missed all of July and most of August with a triceps injury. The Brewers hope he can sustain his health and enjoy a season similar to his 2008 campaign, when he posted a 4.18 ERA and recorded the Brewers only win in the postseason against the eventual World Series champions, the Philadelphia Phillies.
Tue, 26 Jan 2010 12:39:12 ESTGerut, Weeks and Gomez avoid arbitration, sign 1-year deals

Jody Gerut, Rickie Weeks and Carlos Gomez have all avoided arbitration and have signed one-year deals with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Gerut signed for $2 million and Weeks for $2.75 million. The terms of Gomez' deal have not been released.

This was the first year that Gomez was eligible for arbitration. It was Gerut's third and final year and Weeks' second.

Four arbitration eligible players remain unsigned for the 2010: Outfielder Corey Hart and right-handed pitchers Dave Bush, Todd Coffey and Carlos Villanueva. This is Villanueva's first year of eligibility, Hart and Coffey's second and Bush' third.
Tue, 19 Jan 2010 15:52:52 ESTCarlos Villanueva avoids arbitration, signs 1-year deal

The Milwaukee Brewers and right-handed pitcher Carlos Villanueva have avoided arbitration and agreed upon a one-year deal worth $950,000. Villanueva, 26, went 4-10 last year with a 5.34 ERA appearing in 64 games, six of which were starts.

Villanueva will be looking on to pick up where he left off after the 2009 season, as he was strong to close out the season. During September and October, he went 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA in 13 appearances. He also pitched better out of the bullpen, with a 4.84 ERA in his 58 appearances as compared to a 6.52 ERA over six starts, and with the offseason additions of Randy Wolf and Doug Davis, Villanueva's day as even a spot starter are likely behind him.

The 2009 season was Villanueva's fourth with the Brewers. From 2006 through 2008 he collectively went 14-14 with a 3.94 ERA.

http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewNews.do?newsId=111

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed 39-year old outfielder Jim Edmonds to a minor league deal and have invited him to their big-league training camp. Edmonds will make $850,000 if he makes the big-league roster, and could earn over $2 million based on performance incentives.

Edmonds can opt out and ask for his release if he is not added to the roster by March 25.

The left-handed hitting and throwing outfielder, who turns 40 this coming June, did not play during the 2009 season. He hasn't been as effective as his peak years since the 2005 season when he played with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is a career .284/.377/.528 hitter that has hit right-handed pitching a lot better (.296/.393/.562) than lefties, which is of interest to the Brewers given their right-handed heavy outfield alignment of Ryan Braun, Carlos Gomez and Corey Hart.

With 382 home runs, Edmonds has recognized that reaching 400 is something he would like to accomplish, and may have that opportunity with the Brewers serving as the team's fourth outfielder and primary pinch hitter, while also providing an intriguing option as the designated hitter during interleague play.
Fri, 29 Jan 2010 16:12:20 ESTBrewers sign LHP Doug Davis; Coffey avoids arbitration

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed left-handed pitcher Doug Davis to a one-year, $4.25 million dollar deal that includes a mutual option for 2011. The option is worth $6.5 million, which includes a $1 million buyout should the Brewers opt out. Davis can also earn $1 million worth of performance bonuses in both years of the contract.

Davis, 34, has spent the last three years with the Diamondbacks after being traded to Arizona in November of 2006, along with Dana Eveland and Dave Krynzel, for Johnny Estrada, Greg Aquino and Claudio Vargas. In that time Davis has posted a 4.22 ERA, just up from the 4.20 ERA he posted from 2003 through 2006 in his first tour with the Brewers.

Last season he went 9-13 with a 4.12 ERA while also eclipsing the 200 inning mark, the first time he had done so since he posted three consecutive 200-inning seasons with the Brewers from 2004-06.

Once Davis' signing becomes official upon passing his physical, the Brewers' 40-man roster will be full.

Right-handed reliever Todd Coffey also avoided arbitration by signing a one-year deal worth $2.025 million. It was also learned that Carlos Gomez, whose signing was reported earlier this week, signed for $1.1 million.
Thu, 21 Jan 2010 21:10:17 EST
