The Milwaukee Brewers lost Rickie Weeks for the remainder of the 2009 season due to a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. He will have the surgery on Wednesday, marking the second time Weeks will lose significant time due to a wrist injury.

Weeks was enjoying a break-out season for the surging Brewers, so the news is especially tough for both the team and Weeks, who career thus far has been slowed a few times due to injuries. The team is expected to call up Hernan Iribarren, who was removed from tonight's starting lineup with the AAA Nashville Stars, to take Weeks' spot on the roster. The team does have some flexibility after they called up Mat Gamel, which could allow Craig Counsell to spend more time at second base with Hall sharing playing time with Gamel at third.
Mon, 18 May 2009 22:42:13 EDTBrewers trade Gwynn to Padres for Jody Gerut

The Milwaukee Brewers have traded Tony Gwynn Jr. to the San Diego Padres for Jody Gerut. Gwynn was the team's second round pick in the 2003 draft, and is a career .275 hitter at the minor league level. He's also a career .248 hitter at the big-league level, and his opportunities have slowly but surely dwindled in the Brewers organization.

Gerut, 31, is a career .267/.332/.443 hitter that hits right-handed pitches particularly well (.284/.344/.472) and has the ability to play all three outfield spots. The Brewers obviously had interest in adding more balance to their roster, and with the additions of Mat Gamel, Hernan Iribarren and Gerut, the team quickly added three left-handed bats to their bench to help complement an otherwise right-handed heavy everyday lineup.

Gerut is only hitting .221 this season, but he is coming off of a big season from a year ago in which he hit .296/.351/.494. Gwynn returns home to play for the franchise his Hall of Fame father did for 20 years.
Thu, 21 May 2009 23:21:11 EDTFormer # 1 Picks Swap Farm Team Assignments

In a move that makes a lot of sense, 26-year-old RHP Mike Jones and 21-year-old RHP Jeremy Jeffress have swapped spots, with Jones headed to AA Huntsville and Jeffress to high-A Brevard County.

Huntsville's John Curtis is a fine pitching coach, but maybe Fred Dabney (and the ultra-friendly Florida State League environment) can boost Jeffress' performance.

As for Jones, let's see where this April ride from "we're prepared to release you, but if you'd like, we have a spot at Brevard for you if you want it" goes. It sure would be something if Jones could build on his performance and place himself in AAA if he re-signs in 2010.

Jones was drafted with the 12th pick overall out of a California high school in 2001. This will be the 6th season he has spent at least one game on the Huntsville roster. Jeffress was drafted with the 16th overall pick in 2006 out of a Virginia high school. Jones' career path has been sidetracked by both shoulder and labrum surgeries. Jeffress has struggled in 2009, walking 33 in 27.1 innings.
Tue, 19 May 2009 13:53:59 EDTBrewers select RHP Eric Arnett in first round of draft
http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewNews.do?newsId=101

The Milwaukee Brewers have selected Indiana Hoosier, right-handed pitcher Eric Arnett, in the first round of the June Amateur free agent draft.

Arnett, 21, was named the Big Ten co-pitcher of the year after going 12-2 with a 2.50 ERA. The 6'5", 225 pound righty sits in the low-to-mid-90s as a starting pitcher, touching a few ticks higher than that on occasion, and also throws a nasty slider.

The Brewers also selected outfielder Kentrail Davis from the University of Tennessee, and another big right-handed pitcher in Kennesaw State's Kyle Heckathorn in the supplemental first round, compensatory picks for CC Sabathia and Brian Shouse respectively.

http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewNews.do?newsId=97

The Milwaukee Brewers have summoned Mat Gamel from AAA Nashville to join the big-league club in Milwaukee. No corresponding move has been announced to make room for him on the 25-man active roster, but he likely will replace one of either Casey McGehee or Brad Nelson, who are hitting .200 and .000 respectively. Nelson is the more likely candidate, who could benefit and hopefully will get back on track with some time spent back in the minors.

The bench overall has been struggling for the Brewers, with Chris Duffy hitting .107. Fortunately the starting lineup, which includes the third base platoon of Bill Hall and Craig Counsell, has been strong so far this year, which likely means Gamel is being brought up to solidify an already sound offense. The move also somewhat coincides with interleague play, which opens in just over a week during Memorial Day weekend with a road trip against the Twins in the Metrodome.

Gamel, 23, was the Brewers fourth round pick in the 2005 draft, the same year they selected Ryan Braun. Gamel was off to a hot start with the Sounds, batting .336, and he's a career .308 hitter in the minors. He has been especially good the past two seasons, with a .327/.399/.552 line between the AA and AAA levels. During that time he has 46 doubles, eight triples and 28 home runs, and has been solid against both right and left-handed pitchers, which should help add balance to the big-league roster.

He already collected his first big-league hit during a September call-up last September, recording a double in the ninth inning against Chris Young, who tossed a three-hitter against the Crew.

Gamel gets the bump despite questions about his glove. While reports have been favorable out of Nashville this spring, he has recorded eight errors already this year, although it remains to be seen how much playing time he receives at third base given how well the aforementioned tandem of Hall and Counsell has been performing.
Wed, 13 May 2009 21:39:22 EDT
