last updated: 09/04/2003

The Power 50 will have two more installments this season, one on the 18th and then the final version for the 2003 season on the 2nd of October. After that, it will be updated about monthly, though if there is little activity through November, the next update may not come until December. Thanks again for visitng!

  Power 50
+/- Rank  Name  Level  Pos  Age
 01 Hardy, J.J.   MLB   SS 37 R R
Let the speculation begin on whether J.J. will be Milwaukee's shortstop next year or not
 02 Fielder, Prince   A   1B 35 L R
Trade Sexson, bring up Prince next year... why not?
 03 Weeks, Rickie   A   2B 37 R R
The question for next year: Huntsville or Indianapolis?
 04 Nelson, Brad   A   1B 37 L R
It is pretty clear Brad needs another season in AA, even if he has a strong AFL season
 05 Parra, Manny   A   MR 37 L L
No instructional league in the fall means guys like Manny can rest
 06 Jones, Mike   A   MR 36 R R
With Parra probably ticketed for Huntsville next year, Mike will be a dogfight to reclaim top pitching prospect honors
 07 Martinez, Luis   MLB   SP 39 L L
First major league start (4+ IP, 6 H, 5 BB, 1 K) was easily Looie's worst start of the season
 08 Krynzel, Dave   MLB   CF 38 L L
Dave more or less completely collapsed in the final month of the season, so I'd suggest restarting him in Huntsville next season
 09 Hendrickson, Ben   MLB   SP 38 R R
Didn't make a strong showing in the Stars' opening game in their playoff series
 10 Hart, Corey   A   OF 37 R R
Clubbed 40 doubles and gained MVP honors in the Southern League
 11 Hall, Billy   MLB   3B 39 R R
Billy now needs just 16 Brewer AB to graduate off of the Power 50, and he could get those this week
3  12 Palmisano, Lou   A   C 37 R R
In a moment of some self-fulfilling-already-knew-that-anyway prophecy, Lou did win MVP honors in the Pioneer League before I mention he might last week
1  13 Ford, Matt   A   MR 38 S L
Having surgery to remove a bone spur from his left elbow
1  14 Gwynn Jr, Tony   MLB   OF 37 L R
Huntsville might have enough outfielders to begin next season that Tony will have to play in High Desert to begin with
1  15 Liriano, Pedro   A   SP 39 R R
Almost got to the 2:1 K:BB plateau, but not quite
1  16 Wilhelmsen, Tom   A   MR 36 R R
Have to think about maybe Tom going back to Beloit to begin next season
1  17 Bruso, Greg   A   SP 39 R R
Laregly inauspicious start to Milwaukee Brewer career
2  18 Diggins, Ben   A   MR 40 R R
There are no Digginses in the St. Paul phone book
 19 Petty, Chad   A   SP 37 L L
Will be interesting to see what happens to Chad in Huntsville next season
 20 Cruz, Enrique   A   SS 38 R R
Can Enrique go one whole month without an AB?
 21 Moss, Steve   A   CF 35 R R
If Gwynn ends up in High Desert, I'd keep Steve in Beloit because he's most valuable as a CF
2  22 Sarfate, Dennis   MLB   MR 38 R R
Tied for second in the system with 12 victories, one behind Derek Lee's 13
2  23 Ballouli, Khalid   A   SP 39 R R
With a bunch of guys already penciled in for Huntsville, it might be High Desert afterall
1  24 Belcher, Jason   A   RF 37 L R
Probably did enough before getting injured to be promoted to Huntsville for next season
3  25 Clark, D.J.   A   LF 40 L R
At some point, D.J. is going to have to find that line between plate patience and being the power hitter he is capable of being
4  26 Ramirez, Carlos   A   SP 35 L L
Among top 10 in Pioneer League ERA... pretty good for a just-turned-19 year old
2  27 Zoccolillo, Peter   AAA   RF 42 L R
I'd call him up to Milwaukee, especially with Vander Wal gimpy, but it looks like that won't happen
5  28 Gemoll, Brandon   A   1B 39 L L
Brandon managed to get his OPS up to 770 by the end of the season, and thereby making a viable push for a promotion to Indy
1  29 Johnson, Kade   A   C 41 R R
Tied the mighty Kremblas in batting average to finish the year, at a paltry .192
2  30 Eveland, Dana   MLB   SP 36 L L
We get it, Dana, you're a great closer, now we just need you to be a good starter
4  31 Machado, Alejandro   A   2B 37 S R
Success in K.C.'s system didn't translate over to well to Huntsville
2  32 Varner, Noochie   MLB   RF 39 R R
OPS finished below 700 and there's no way I'd promote him to Indy next season
2  33 Chavez, Ozzie   A   IF 36 S R
Who was the last player to have more homers than doubles and more triples than doubles?
1  34 Childers, Matt   A   MR 41 R R
Pitched very well in AAA to finish the season there, and there wouldn't be any harm in bringing him up to get a few innings
2  35 Adams, Mike   MLB   CL 41 R R
Southern League batters hit .208 off Mike, which may be a good sign of things to come
3  36 Crabbe, Callix   A   UT 36 S R
Will be back at second base next year in High Desert
1  37 Vanden Berg, John   A   C 39 R R
OPS fell off there a little at the end of the season
2  38 Carpenter, Calvin   A   SP 37 R R
Pretty much fell apart this season, but he's good enough to pick up the pieces
1  39 Nance, Shane   A   MR 42 L L
Somewhere in there, there is a major league pitcher
1  40 Housman, Jeff   A   MR 38 L L
Jeff wasn't supposed to be in AA this early, so why not send him up to Indy next season?
1  41 Ramirez, Manny   A   1B 37 R R
Played part of last night's game at catcher - yay!
1  42 Fermaint, Charlie   A   CF 34 R R
Batting average went way down, and only walked once every 33 AB, so OBP and OPS took a huge drop, too
1  43 Acosta, Gilberto   A   SS 37 S R
30 SB in short-season Arizona ball? Wow
1  44 Rottino, Vinny   MLB   UT 39 R R
Hopefully Vinnie develops some pop, because he'd probably be about 30 spots higher if he did
1  45 Kloosterman, Greg   A   SP 37 L L
As long as the ball stays down, he'll be great in Beloit next season
1  46 Anderson, Drew   A   OF 38 L R
Hit first home run of the season this week, and later that game, hit another
1  47 Bibbs, Kennard   A   RF 39 L L
KB is going to have to keep proving he's more than a utility OF type as he moves on next season
1  48 Wooley, Robbie   A   SP 35 R R
Robbie got off to a good running start and should be set up to go in Helena next year
1  49 Trofholz, Terry   A   CF 39 R R
Would really, really like to see those walk totals come up next year
new  50 Hawk, Tommy   A   SP 34 R R
Tommy lead the Arizona League in ERA... congrats!
